First I'd like to say, I will not even scratch the surface of Wordpress. If you have a lot of questions, then please contact us.
WordPress is a free, open-source, content management system. Sounds great, sign me up, right? There are some things you should know before jumping in feet first to a WordPress site.
In addition to to WordPress, there are many others out there that are open-source and free content management systems such as Joomla! and Drupal.
It was originally put out there as a free blogging tool. Since it's inception it has become a "standard" in quick web development, but that doesn't mean it should be your first and only choice.
The biggest factor to consider with a WordPress site is design. If you have a design firm charging you an arm and a leg to build a WordPress site stop and ask a few questions. Wordpress is mainly comprised of templates that people use to build quick and easy sites. There are a lot of firms out there that use these templates and don't tell their clients. The fact of the matter is, is that it is pretty difficult to build a custom WordPress site. There is a difference between building a Wordpress site and building on the WordPress platform.
If you choose to design a WordPress site yourself, then be prepared to run in to some very difficult design challenges. In our opinion, if you choose to design a site yourself rather that outsourcing it to a firm like ours, use a paid option. It will be much easier and time saving.
If you are creating a Wordpress site for your personal blog, then go for it. However, consider using paid WordPress.com service in order to set it up. Installing the files for WordPress to the hosting company of your choice can be tricky if you are new to the world of web design.
Past the design aspect, you have to consider updates and backup. You have to manually update your software in order to be sure that everything is functioning properly. Also, you will have to manually backup your site.
Again, let us know if you have any question about what WordPress is, and if you should use it.
